There’s really only one subject of conversation this week;
Coronavirus. Along with an estimated 28 million Brits, I listened to Prime
Minister Boris Johnson’s address to the nation on Monday regarding the global
pandemic.
Suddenly, something
that had started over 7 thousand miles away was on our doorstep, changing every
aspect of daily life, even in sleepy Betley.
The panic-buying
that defined the last three weeks has eased. New concepts of ‘self-distancing’
and ‘self-isolation’ have been the watchwords. Polite queues, observing the self-distancing
requirements of 2 metres between people, snake out of the larger supermarkets. Other
‘essential’ trades have been adapting quickly to the new regulations. The rest,
for now, have been moth-balled, and householders told to remain in their homes.

We’ve spent
the week working out what the impact of the new regulations will have on us. We
are no different than any other household in the UK, or indeed much of the
world in that sense. There have been job losses to contend with, and workplaces
made off limits by the new regulations. We are fortunate in that all our
household members were able to return home.
As far as
the gardens at Betley Court are concerned, things are on hold. I will have to
work out what to do with unplanted plants, and the boxes of tubers I bought
recently. Thankfully, the allotment at the end of our garden at home is not off
limits – provided we observe the social distancing rules. I’m considering the
practicalities of potting things up temporarily on the allotment and
transferring them to Betley Court Gardens when the special measures are eased. It
will be a bit of a mither (as we say in these parts), but would mean the plants
could get on with the business of growing. Anyway, my workplace is off limits, so I'm looking for things to occupy me!

And in the scheme of things, it
seems to be a small price to pay for helping the efforts against Coronavirus.
