Christmas Greetings
A short post today, to wish you a peaceful Christmas. We
reinstated a once lost tradition this year, hosting a Christmas gathering in
the drawing room. We invited all the residents of the flats of Betley Court
along with our staff and their families. Brown family members served mince pies
and sherry as a ‘thank you’ to everyone who makes Betley Court the special
community it is. One of our newest residents is mum to a very talented harpist,
and our gathering was accompanied by the most wonderful music played on an
instrument 200 years old (thank you Jill and Jessica). The drawing room,
remodelled by John Nash in 1810, was made for gatherings like this, and I can’t
help but feel that Sir Thomas Fletcher and his wife, Lady Ann, looking down
from their portraits on the wall, would approve.
Christmas Day marked the 3rd anniversary of the
passing of Dr Freda Brown, the Professor’s wife. Freda always made sure the
house was a welcoming place, and hosted gatherings for visitors from all over
the world. I think she would be glad
that we have resurrected this tradition.
With that, I would like to wish you a prosperous New Year in
2019, and hope to see you next year, when we start our gradual awakening of
Betley Court Gardens.
Best wishes, Ladybird Su
